U.S. Confirms It Has Deployed Weapons in Space for the First Time

The United States has publicly confirmed for the first time that it has deployed weapons in Earth’s orbit, marking a significant moment in the growing military importance of space.

Air Force Secretary Troy Meink revealed the existence of what he described as “on-orbit space control weapons” Monday during the Air & Space Forces Association’s 2026 Air, Space & Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland.

“Today, we continue to ensure we remain ready to meet the challenges of evolving threats, wherever they exist,” Meink said, before confirming that the United States now possesses orbital weapons capable of defending American and allied forces against hostile actions.

Meink did not reveal exactly what the weapons are, how many have been deployed, when they entered orbit or precisely what they are capable of doing.

That leaves a major question surrounding the announcement: What exactly does the United States now have orbiting Earth?

The term “space control” can cover several different technologies designed to interfere with or neutralize an adversary’s space capabilities. Possibilities can include electronic jamming, directed-energy systems and other technologies capable of disrupting satellites. There is currently no public evidence that the newly acknowledged U.S. systems are kinetic weapons designed to physically destroy satellites.

The disclosure comes as space increasingly becomes an important military domain. U.S. officials have warned for years that both China and Russia are developing capabilities that could threaten American satellites and other assets in orbit.

Meink pointed directly to those developments when explaining the need for the new capabilities.

“It is critically important that we maintain our dominance not only in the air but in space,” Meink said.

While satellites have supported military communications, navigation, surveillance and missile warning for decades, the acknowledgment of actual weapons operating in orbit represents a notable shift in what the Pentagon is willing to publicly disclose.

For now, the technology behind those weapons remains classified.

But one thing is no longer speculation: the United States has officially confirmed that it has weapons in space.
